5 x 5's and my Kelly Berkey Challenge of the week

When I don't know what to paint......no real vision....I go to my 5 x 5 little canvases! For some reason, something so small takes all the pressure off of trying to reach perfection :) The last couple of nights I did these three. The first is a girl......not sure what to title it. She kind of looks sweetly pissed :)

Mixed media with antique ledger paper wings.

A couple of whimsical birds :)

This is my Kelly Berkey challenge for this week. I thought instead of putting her in my sketch journal I'd go ahead and draw her on watercolor paper and try to color her in. Well the photo ended at just below the knees and since I didn't know how to draw feet, I put her in the ocean. ha! This is such a great challenge for me.....trying to get proportions right. I'm still a work in progress obviously as it appears I've given her one big blue diaper! Oh well, it will be fun to go back and see some of these beginning sketches after I (hopefully) get better at them.

Want to join me? Hop on over to Kelly's blog and jump on it!

love the small canvas pieces. I agree with you, I too feel less "pressure" when doing smaller pieces. =)

Your Kelly picture is great! I love that you put her in the ocean hehe that bit made me laugh because of the way you phrased it!

Gorgeous birds - I love them

Your paintings of faces made me sign in Norah's class quite some time ago and I still love your faces. Birds are great also.
Kelly will love your painting, her positioned in the sea. Like enjoying unplanned vacations :)

Lovely work Darla and to me that little lady seems to be asking the butterfly..."You talking to me?" :)
The birds are precious!
Have a happy creative evening...

Hey, Darla!! your painting is awesome. I often go to 6" x 6' paintings when I'm stuck also. I did a ton of them this summer. They're also great to give as gifts!!

I think you did a very lovely job of painting Kelly. I have a harder time adding color than doing sketches in graphite. Color is hard to get right when you are doing skin.

Your stretching to sketch painting is wonderful - I love that you put her in water... A very creative idea!

I'm going to have to try a 5x5 - I've never worked on a canvas that small before!
